About the Cavachon
Cavachons are the adorable offspring of Cavaliers and Bichons. While their temperament can vary from dog to dog, they are generally known for being playful and good with children. They are loyal, and tend to develop a strong relationship with a particular member of the family. They tend to be fairly friendly to other dogs and pets if properly socialized during puppyhood. They’re an intelligent breed, making them easier to train than some others. And you WILL want to train them, as otherwise they could develop into barkers.
They tend to run anywhere from 12 to 16 inches tall, and weigh 10 to 20 pounds. There is also a toy version of the Cavachon, which is even smaller. The exact size of a Cavachon, especially their height, will depend greatly upon the size of the parents used to produce that puppy. Cavachon puppies come in a variety of colors, the most common being peach and white. You’ll also see tri-colored, black and tan, and sable.
Cavachon puppies need grooming about every 6 weeks, while they will average a bath and brushing once a week. Thankfully, their low shedding, hypoallergenic coats more than make up for the additional maintenance they require.
Cavachon puppies tend to be a pretty healthy breed. Because they are crossbred, they’re less likely to develop the types of conditions purebred dogs could develop thanks to the larger gene pool they can draw from. Of course, they can still develop health conditions, and may suffer from things like ear infections, heart murmurs, eye problems, and flea allergies. The average lifespan of the Cavachon is 10-15 years.
The ideal home environment for Cavachon Puppies is one where they will recieve constant love and adoration, along with a generous heaping of affection! They thrive on the attention, and will do quite well in large homes or apartments as long as they’re given daily exercise to help burn off excess energy. Remember to keep an eye out, though. They sometimes flee, and should not be left unsupervised outside.
Cavaliers were originally bred for hunting. Bichons were also used for hunting. The cross between the two makes a great companion that loves to sit on your lap.
We have been breeding Cavachons since 2010. In that time, we have learned that if the mother is a Bichon, they will have the best chance of being non-shedders, and have the best coats. Our puppies always have Bichon mothers for this reason. Many of our dogs are champions, and ALL are OFA health certified.
